Next Wednesday, November 5, from 5:30-7 pm we will be holding our Fall Term General Membership Meeting in the Journey Room at Memorial Union (and on Zoom). While we will be talking about our new contract and how we can work together on implementation, we will also be discussing the rapidly changing higher education landscape both nationally and within Oregon. We are lucky to have Mike Urbancic, president of AAUP Oregon and fellow faculty union member at the University of Oregon, joining us talk to us about how faculty in Oregon are fighting back, as well as fill us in on what’s happening in higher ed in Oregon in regards to pushing back against cuts and layoffs. Member Assistance Fund: We understand that with the current federal government shutdown and the uncertainty around SNAP funds, that it may be difficult financially for our members. Our union has a member assistance fund aimed at helping UAOSU members who are experiencing emergency financial hardship. Members can apply for up to $1000 in assistance, and the Executive Committee will review requests within 10 days of their submission. Promotion Workshops: We have two fast-approaching sessions on the promotion process for Instructors, Faculty Research Assistants, and Research Associates. If you’re starting to think about promotion, working on your materials, or want to get started on your second promotion, you’re invited to join one of these sessions. These sessions will cover:
- eligibility requirements and timelines for promotion
- benefits of promotion for fixed term faculty
- advice from faculty members who have been through the process already or are currently working on their promotion materials
- You questions, comments, and concerns about initiating and navigating the process
