We have heard from several members this week that promoted faculty in non-tenure-track positions have started receiving notices from OSU Human Resources indicating their transition to continuous appointment. This reflects a significant win from our last round of contract negotiations and an increase in job protections for non-tenure track faculty.
Rather than prior practice of using fixed-term appointments that supervisors could either renew or non-renew at will, promoted faculty in non-tenure-track positions now have the expectation of ongoing employment. With a continuous appointment, faculty can only be terminated for cause (subject to the just cause protections in Article 21) or terminated not for cause in the event of a unit reorganization or reduction (subject to the process requirements and protections in Article 24). You can read Articles 21 and 24 of our Collective Bargaining Agreement here.
We were able to secure this and other wins during contract negotiations thanks to the power of faculty working together. Now more than ever it’s important for us to remain a united faculty to defend our contract gains. If you’re not yet a member of our union, you can join online at uaosu.org/join.
In solidarity,
Marisa Chappell, UAOSU Executive VP
